A review of rocket flight studies, calculations, and predictions up to the year 1929 is presented. The earth's gravitational and atmospheric envelopes are considered, along with the physiological effects of acceleration, deceleration, and weightlessness. The reactive craft and propellant properties are described and equations of motion are given. The rocket thrust calculations and theories of Tsiolkovskii are discussed for flight inside and outside a gravitational field. The rocket flight studies of Esnault-Pelterie, Goddard, Oberth, Hohmann, and Valier are also reviewed.
